Generator types
When purchasing a generator, it’s important to find the right type for the equipment you intend to power. Ignoring the engine powering the generator, there are broadly four types of portable generator; these are Brushed, Brushless, Inverter Generators and Welder Generators. Each type has a purpose, and these concepts should be followed to prevent damage to the generator or the equipment being powered.
Brushless Generators
These generators do not have voltage regulators, there is no electrical control over the output. The output is determined by just the engine speed, so if the engine speed varies for any reason, so does the output voltage. This means that this type of generator is not suitable for sensitive equipment and is generally intended for power tools, they are quite commonly found in the construction Industry.
Brushed Generators
These generators do have voltage regulators (AVRs) and provide a much more refined output. Brushed generators typically produce the correct output, unless the engine speed varies drastically, at which point the generator will simply not provide any voltage. This is not absolutely failproof, so while brushed generators are great for backing up your house and powering white goods, lighting etc. they are not suitable for very sensitive equipment such as computers and modern TVs etc.
Inverter Generators
These generators provide very accurate power output and are designed for sensitive equipment such as computers, modern TVs, modems, etc. The inverter boards have inbuilt circuit breakers that prevent incorrectly regulated output from reaching your equipment. These generators typically have quite low output, 1-3Kw so are not very suitable as backup generators. It is also worth noting that the inverter boards (the part that fails when the generator is overloaded) are quite expensive or often not available, so inverter generators should be used very carefully!
Welder Generators
Are you planning to power a welder? If so, you should consider a welder generator. Welders require higher currents than a typical AC generator can produce and we regularly speak to people who have damaged their alternator while powering a portable welder.
